Day 1

Arrive early between 7- 7.30am to allow parents time to get back to work. The camp starts at 8am at the latest. Today we get straight into learning about the Survival Mindset, we learn about “The Big 5” (Water, Warmth, Signal, Shelter, Fire) and how that applies to surviving, setting up the perfect tent and how to light a fire with flint.

We will also explain bush hygiene and start paring back our kit via the “need it vs want it” principle. Participants will cook their dinner over an open fire which they light using a flint. Camp 1 is in a tent at Mt Barney Lodge giving us a good nights sleep before the next days adventure.

Day 2

Building on yesterday’s knowledge, we leave the Lodge grounds and hike with packs into the bush ready to use some of the skills and gain even more. First we learn how to use a knife correctly and use them to make our swag roll to carry everything in.

On our walk out to Camp 2 we will learn/taste/understand bushtucker principles, understand the “Rule of Three Principle” for equipment, learn the knots needed for the camp and understand the usefulness of everyday objects we may come across on our trek.

Tonight we are constructing our shelter out of a tarp and some rope along with any design features the natural environment gives us.

We are also going to light our fire without flint or even matches … Can you rise to the challenge?? Choose to sleep under the stars, under a fly in the swag you have created, or in a tent, using all the skills you have learnt.

Day 3

As well as having fun around the camp, we will learn what to do if you lose your compass, how to respond to an injury or snakebite, and how to attract attention with minimal equipment. Learn what to carry in a survival kit.

All this and more will be learnt as we trek back to the Lodge for an afternoon swim. Mum and Dad will drop in between 4-5pm for a 5pm presentation and shared BBQ dinner. Additional dinner guests $10pp, bookings essential. They might even decide to spend a few days camping and learning survival skills from you.

Aimed at 12-14 y.o. youth this inaugural camp will be a winner and is sure to fill fast so please get your nomination forms in fast…

~local properties ~ local gardens ~ local unique experiences~

Mt Barney is within the beautiful Scenic Rim right on Brisbane’s doorstep to the south, and is the setting for the “A World Apart” food and wine discovery tour.

A World Apart had been featured on The Great South East, and included in Great Gourmet Weekends of Australia.

Testimonial: "I attended the navigation workshop at Mt Barney Lodge during July. It offered fantastic value for money with attentive and constructive instruction from Innes. Yes, the concepts and equipment were a little challenging in the first instance for the navigation neophyte, however the ability to apply my new knowledge on a couple of subsequent (guided) walks was so helpful.

The MBL facilities were, as always, clean and tidy, and the team's assistance was super friendly and helpful. In fact I left with a sense of having been extended the hospitality of a family! On a freezy cold night in the middle of winter, the camp grounds were fully booked and the atmosphere very jovial.
I would recommend that future participants take an extra day following the workshop and put their new found skills to immediate use with a self-guided walk.

To Innes, Tracey, Nea, nav. classmate Hamish, and the rest of the MBL team....thanks again."
