For the majority of the hikes around Mt Barney National Park, we have always recommended (or provided) you take a topographical (topo) map with you . But, over the years topo maps have become harder and harder to find in shops.
Things are changing… the digital age is quickly advancing to include google maps, GPS’s etc. And now, topographical maps can only be found online.
The Queensland government has released all topographical maps for Queensland in a digital format online via QTopo: http://qtopo.dnrm.qld.gov.au/Mobile/
So what is a topographical map?
Topographic maps show information about the shape of the land, both natural features and man-made (cultural) structures. They can be used to calculate exact measurements of distance, direction, area and quantity. Depending on the map scale and size, some features are symbolised to provide additional information.
Why do I need a topographical map?
There are two types of hiking, one where you follow well marked paths and the other where you just head off into the bush, following animal trails or even making your own.
A topographic map will tell you where the paths are, information about the terrain, including creeks, paths, roads and other essential information for going off well used tracks. When using a topo map you are able to work out your location based on terrain features. With the use of a GPS you are also able to pinpoint your location on the map.
How does QTopo work?
From the QTopo website, QTopo allows you to generate your own maps in a variety of different formats, such as PDF or JPEG.
By using your mouse, you can select an area and it will generate the map and email you the link. You can then print out your map, save as a PDF, or put them on your phone or tablet. See this tutorial on how to use QTopo and generate your very own maps.
